Work Permit in Singapore

Everything you need to know to work legally and securely in Singapore.

Service Overview

The Work Permit (WP) is a work visa issued by the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) in Singapore to foreign semi-skilled and unskilled workers from approved source countries. It enables employers in sectors like construction, manufacturing, marine shipyard, process, or services to hire foreign workers legally and efficiently.

Who Can Apply?

Work permits are specifically tailored for these core Singaporean sectors.

Construction

Roles such as general workers, scaffolders, and heavy machine operators.

Manufacturing

Factory and assembly line workers in electronics, food, and heavy industry.

Marine Shipyard

Welders, riggers, and maintenance technicians for vessel and port work.

Process

Crucial support for pharmaceutical, chemical, and oil/gas industries.

Services

Vital roles in cleaning, retail, food & beverage, and hospitality sectors.

Key Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following conditions set by MOM.

Minimum Age

Must be at least 18 years old at the time of application.

Maximum Age

Varies by sector but generally must be under 60 years old.

Health Clearance

Includes strict medical exams, X-rays, and other health checks.

Clean Record

Applicants must not have any serious criminal offenses on record.

Application Process

Follow these essential steps to secure a Singapore Work Permit.

1. Employer Registration

Employers must be officially registered with MOM to apply for a work permit.

2. Online Application

Submit all applications online securely via MOM’s Work Permit Online system.

3. Documents Required

Includes passport details, recent photographs, and comprehensive medical reports.

4. Processing Time

Usually takes 1 to 2 weeks depending on the sector and document completeness.

5. Issuance

Upon approval, the physical Work Permit card (WP card) will be issued to the worker.

Validity & Renewal

The Work Permit is generally valid for up to 2 years, but may be shorter depending on the employer’s contract and sector. Renewal depends on employer approval, a new medical examination, and strict compliance with government policies.

Note: Work permits are strictly non-transferable. The worker is authorized to work only for the employer who applied for the permit.

Important Considerations

Levy Payments: Employers must pay a monthly foreign worker levy based on sector and worker nationality.

Quota (DRC): Limits the number of foreign workers an employer can hire based on their total local workforce.

Workplace Safety: Employers must ensure proper workplace safety and provide adequate living accommodation.

Termination: If the worker leaves or is terminated, the Work Permit must be canceled with MOM within 7 days.
